What are the usual culprits behind rattling windows? Loose window components are usually to blame for rattling sounds.
If you hear rattling sounds, you should check these window components:

- Glass panes – Your windows’ glass panes will start to rattle if the caulking holding them in place is damaged. Recaulking the glass panes should keep them from shaking.
- Window sash – Wear and tear can damage the window sash and loosen it over time.
- Wooden Components – If you have wooden windows, check the components made of wood. Water might have infiltrated your window and caused rot to form. Rotting wooden components need to be replaced immediately. Otherwise, wood rot might spread.
Should You Replace Rattling Windows?
While it’s possible to repair rattling windows, it makes more financial sense to get a window replacement. Rattling sounds are usually a sign window performance has already been compromised. Not to mention repairs won’t fully restore energy-efficient windows’ performance.
For instance, if you have argon-filled, energy-efficient windows, wear and tear may have loosened some window components and damaged the sealing on the glass panes. The glass sealing can be easily repaired, but the gas that leaked out can’t be easily replaced. (You’d need to hire a specialist to refill the insulated glass unit with argon.) As such, in these cases, a window replacement is the more practical option.
Making the Most of a Window Replacement
Always do your research before choosing a window replacement. When choosing new energy-efficient windows for your home, look for the ENERGY STAR® label. Only windows that have met the EPA’s stringent performance standards. You should also consider a window’s maintenance needs. For instance, double-hung windows are easier to clean than other windows, thanks to their tilted sashes. By tilting them, you can clean the outside glass panes from inside your home. Remember: routine maintenance is a must if you want to keep your windows in good condition.
