Maintenance Tips for New Windows and Doors

With spring just around the corner, most residents are looking forward to spring…and a chance for some spring cleaning. Of course, your home’s exterior was the hardest hit during winter and, come springtime, it’s best to take some time to check on your home’s exterior to make sure all is still in tip-top shape.

Two important features of your home’s exterior are your windows and the doors. These two components are not just there to enhance the overall aesthetics of your home, your windows and doors play important roles in your home’s security, convenience and comfort. That’s why you have to make sure that your windows and doors are well maintained throughout the year; and spring cleaning is a great opportunity for you to be able to do just that.

But what if your windows and doors are fairly new? If you just purchased and installed a replacement door or window, you’re probably thinking that you don’t have to check on them for a long time. To ensure continued smooth operation and lasting beauty for years to come, Renewal by Andersen®, the leading manufacturer and installer of patio doors and replacement windows, recommend inspecting and cleaning your windows and doors as often as you can…even if your doors and windows are newly installed. This will not only keep your home looking great from the outside as well as the inside, regular upkeep will also ensure that your home improvement investments will perform beautifully for a long time.

So, what maintenance is required for new windows and doors?

Making sure that your new windows and replacement patio doors are clean doesn’t need to be complicated. Store-bought window and door-cleaning solutions are okay but not necessary. Using just good old-fashioned ammonia cleaner or white vinegar solution will do. After wiping dirt and other debris off the surface using a clean rag and ammonia/vinegar solution, you can rinse off the suds using a bucket of water mixed with two tablespoons of rubbing alcohol; this will help the water evaporate quickly and will give your doors and windows a sparkle. For the glass panes, use clean water to wash off the solution and immediately use a squeegee to wipe off excess water. Wipe the squeegee dry using a clean rag after every stroke to avoid streaks. Finish off by wiping the corners and sills using a clean coffee filter.
