There is a good deal of confusion around what type of damage is covered by a typical homeowner’s insurance policy. For example, if your windows break, will your policy cover the cost of window replacement? Read on as Renewal by Andersen® of Seattle discusses this question.

What Your Homeowner’s Insurance Will Cover
Coverage depends on what caused the damage to your windows and what kind of insurance policy you have. If you have a named-peril policy, your insurance provider will only cover the perils listed on the policy. If your windows were damaged by an unlisted peril, the insurance provider won’t be obligated to cover the repair.
However, if you have an open-peril policy, your chances of being covered improve drastically due to the large number of cases listed in the insurance policy. For example, if your double hung windows were broken by a recent hailstorm in your area, you are likely covered. Your insurance won’t cover damage caused by your own actions, however, since accidents don’t count as a peril.
Exceptions
Neither type of policy will cover wear and tear caused by the homeowner’s negligence. As a homeowner, it’s your responsibility to keep your home in tip-top shape, and insurance companies have the right to deny you coverage if you don’t conduct regular maintenance or inspections.
