The right hardware finish can make the difference between a plain-looking window and a truly elegant one. As your window replacement company, we’ll a quick guide on hardware finishes.
Window Hardware
There are three types of window hardware: sash, casement and security hardware. The first two include hinges, rollers, and other hardware components that allow windows to open and close. Security hardware secures window sashes closed or sets them at fixed positions.
The finishes on the hardware are essentially coatings. Window hardware is usually made of brass or a similar metal. This is done to ensure consistency regardless of chosen hardware finish, as some metals are softer or are less durable than others. Brass can either be rolled (or stamped) from sheets or cast, the latter being the heavier and more durable option. Windows with hidden hardware, such as the counterweights on double-hung windows, may be made of a different metal.
Choosing Hardware Finishes
Renewal by Andersen offers heavy-duty window hardware with carefully selected finishes. We offer the following hardware finishes:
1. White — White hardware goes best with glossy white window frames found in traditional homes.
2. Stone — Stone finishes look best on walls with concrete finishes and natural decor.
3. Distressed Nickel — Pairs well with reclaimed wood, as well as concrete and exposed brick. This finish is typically seen in Industrial Modern homes.
4. Satin Nickel — Looks best with dark-colored window frames and furniture with bold patterns.
5. Brushed Chrome — Looks great in areas dominated by stainless steel appliances, such as in kitchens. Brushed chrome adds a modern and clean look.
6. Polished Chrome — Another staple of contemporary and Art Deco home styles, polished chrome looks great on neutral window frames and walls.
7. Bright Brass — Bright brass window hardware is typically seen in Colonial-style homes and looks great with classic and elegant design elements.
8. Antique Brass — “Antique” brass approximates the look of natural brass, which pairs well with window frames that have stained wood finishes.
9. Distressed Bronze — Distressed bronze looks great with craftsman-style design elements, which includes natural wood and handmade furnishings.
10. Oil Rubbed Bronze — Oil Rubbed Bronze is a “living finish” that changes over time. It pairs well with Mediterranean and Craftsman home styles.
